Making the Magic – Behind the Scenes

Most people only see the glamorous side of the entertainment industry. The fancy dresses, the make-up, the elaborate set ups, the sparkle, the lights… But that’s only because that’s all we want you to see. We want you to walk into your event as if you are walking onto a flawless cloud. We make sure the music is set to the right volume, the right song is on for the atmosphere and the lights are dimmed accordingly. We want you to be “wowed” from the second you arrive until the moment you leave.

This is no simple task. This process starts days, sometimes weeks or even months in advance. Between the initial contact and the correspondence thereafter, the planning process can be intense. Ideas about the event are discussed back via meetings, phone calls, emails, texts, Facebook messages – you get the idea. I encourage this, but it is time consuming. That’s why it’s very misguided when people say, “must be nice to make all that money and work one day a week.” We are answering messages 7 days a week, sometimes in the middle of the night, early morning and every time in between.

If not that, then we are running to a bridal consult or a venue “go-see” so we know what we’re getting into when we play there. We are headed to the music store to buy that extra wire because the one we had went bad at the last event we did. Or maybe we are going to a wedding rehearsal because we are doing the music for the ceremony the next day. And don’t forget to pick up extra batteries at the store for your microphone!! And snacks…always remember to get snacks. I like Gatorade and fruit bars. Those multi-hour long set-ups will leave you starving!

Then comes the organizational part. Once the client gives me all their requests, I must then put it all together. I have to make sure I have all of the music they would like, type up, and actually rehearse their Grand Entrance, organize a playlist, and make sure everything is squared away with the venue so I can get in when I need. I also spend time visualizing how the event will go.

And NOW we are ready for the BIG DAY!

So the next time you see a wedding DJ, you might now be able to appreciate all that goes into the making of a wedding reception. This is why everything goes so flawlessly. From top to bottom, we take care of every little detail, so it looks effortless. The smoother the event, the more time spent planning. You may see us from 4 pm to 10 pm only, but it’s an around the clock job!

Don’t be fooled though. We love every minute.

Read on, music lovers!
